Abia State is set to make history as over 1,000 students drawn from all public and private tertiary institutions in the state gear up for the first-ever Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta, scheduled to run from November 25 to 28.
The four-day event, which will feature 26 sporting competitions, is designed to harness the energy of Abia youths, promote unity across campuses, and discourage involvement in cultism, drug abuse, and other social vices.
Speaking in Umuahia on Thursday, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, said Governor Alex Otti’s administration is intentionally using sports as a tool for character building and youth development.
According to her, the fiesta will “bring students together under a healthy, competitive atmosphere” and help them discover their talents beyond the classroom.
The featured sports include football, track and field, lawn tennis, swimming, and 22 additional events spread across selected facilities in the state. Activities will take place simultaneously at designated centres, including Umuahia Township Stadium, Ibeku High School and the Ridge Club.
Prof. Uche stressed that the initiative aims to revive extracurricular culture in tertiary institutions, restore student-lecturer relationships, and provide young people with positive alternatives to crime and deviant behaviour.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, said the fiesta will serve as a breeding ground for the next generation of sporting champions who will represent Abia at national and international levels.
He disclosed that all logistics, including accommodation and security, have been secured to ensure a smooth event, adding that Governor Otti places high priority on youth empowerment and has directed that no effort be spared in executing the fiesta successfully.
Ananaba emphasised that the event will not only showcase raw talent but also strengthen collaboration among tertiary institutions across Abia.
The Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta is expected to attract coaches, scouts, sports administrators, and thousands of spectators as the state sets a new pace in organised campus sports development.
