In a historic convergence of tradition and statecraft, the Abia State Government and the ancient Kingdom of Arochukwu have officially launched the 2025 Ikeji Aro Okeigbo Cultural Festival — with a shared ambition: UNESCO listing.
The landmark announcement was made at a high-profile press briefing hosted by the Honourable Commissioner for Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, Hon. Dr. Matthew C. Ekwuribe, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat, Umuahia.
The event marks the formal kickoff of joint efforts to position the Ikeji Festival as Abia State’s first globally recognized cultural heritage event — under the visionary leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Otti.
“Under Governor Otti’s administration, we are not just preserving culture — we are rebranding Abia on the global stage,” declared Dr. Ekwuribe.
“The Ikeji Festival is our flagship. And UNESCO recognition is not a dream — it is our destination.”
🌍 A Royal Delegation, A Cultural Renaissance
The Arochukwu delegation arrived in full regalia, led by the President General of Nzuko Arochukwu Worldwide, Hon. Sir Nnadozie Udensi, and the revered Obong Ekpe (King of Ekpe), Achinivu Okorafor — spiritual custodian of the sacred rites.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Ekwuribe revealed that the State Government has already begun beautification projects across Abia — including the artistic transformation of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) fence in Umuahia, executed by Abia artists.
He also announced plans to mold cultural monuments that will stand as permanent symbols of the state’s heritage.
📜 The Sacred 17-Day Journey: Ikeji Aro 2025 Calendar (As Unveiled by Eze Aro)
In a moment of deep cultural reverence, Mazi Achinivu Okorafor, Chairman of the UNESCO & Culture Sub-Committee and Obong Ekpe, presented the official 2025 Ikeji Calendar, as issued by His Eminence, Eze Aro Dr. Eberechukwu Oji, in consultation with the Eze Aro-in-Council.
The 17-day festival is a meticulously choreographed sequence of ancestral rites, masquerade processions, communal feasts, and spiritual invocations — culminating in a grand cultural competition among the 19 villages of Arochukwu Kingdom.

Sir Nnadozie Udensi praised Governor Otti and Dr. Ekwuribe for their bold cultural diplomacy.
“Governor Otti understands that culture is economy. The roads you’ve built don’t just connect towns — they connect continents to our heritage. With this partnership, the world will no longer read about Arochukwu — they will experience it.”
He emphasized that the Ikeji Festival’s global resonance — with masquerades arriving from Central Africa and descendants returning from the Americas — makes it uniquely qualified for UNESCO inscription.
🏛️ The UNESCO Roadmap: Documenting a Living Legacy
The Ministry and CPC unveiled a comprehensive documentation plan to capture every ritual, chant, costume, and oral history of Ikeji 2025 — using professional filmmakers, ethnographers, and digital archivists.
“UNESCO recognizes living traditions that are community-driven, intergenerational, and spiritually anchored,” explained Dr. Ekwuribe.
“Ikeji checks every box. Our job is to present it — not as folklore, but as a global heritage system.”
The State will also partner with universities and cultural institutions to produce academic dossiers supporting the UNESCO nomination.
🌎 A Festival for the World — A Legacy for Abia
As the press briefing concluded, both parties affirmed their commitment to making Ikeji 2025 not just the biggest in living memory — but the most documented, most promoted, and most globally significant.
Dr. Azubike Okoro, Chair of Ikeji Publicity, explained that the need to gain global mileage in marketing Ikeji and other tourism potentials of the kingdom informed today’s unveiling ceremony — and the strategic partnership with the Abia State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, alongside Goge Africa, which is providing professional services to ensure success.
He hinted that more unveilings in other cities might happen ahead of the Ikeji Grand Finale, Ekekpe Aro-Okeigbo, scheduled for Friday, September 26th.
