Abia State Govt Denies Banning The Use Of “Takeaway” Plates

The Abia State government says it has not placed a ban of the use of styrofoam foils, popularly known as “takeaway” plates which restaurants mostly use to package foods.

The state government through the Ministry of Environment however warned residents on the environmental hazards associated with the single-use foil.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna.

He said, “Following the reports of the obvious health hazards discovered nationally concerning the product called Styrofoam, and popularly known as Take Away Foil, which some States including Lagos State has banned the use of, the Government of Abia State through the Ministry of Environment, wishes to sensitise the general public on the danger of the use of the said Styrofoam, and advise the immediate discontinuous use of it as food containers until further investigations are fully carried out.”

The statement added that the general public should be guided.
