Seeds of a Dream

Almost thirty years ago, in the historic town of Arochukwu, one man’s dream planted the seed for what is now one of the most enduring community newspapers in Nigeria — Aro News Publications Limited.

Dr Azubike Okoro
Founder/ Chairman, Editorial Board

That man was Dr. Azubike Okoro, a visionary journalist and community-minded leader who saw the need for a dedicated news outlet that would bridge the information gap between Aro people at home and those in the diaspora. At inception, Aro News was virtually a one-man operation — non-profit, locally printed, and freely distributed to the community.

“Our goal was never to make money at the beginning,” Dr. Okoro reflected in an interview. “It was to give our people a voice, to preserve our culture, and to tell our own stories.”

From this humble foundation, Aro News steadily became more than a newspaper. It became a voice, an archive, and a rallying point for the Arochukwu community.

From Community Support to Formal Structure

As the years passed, the publication drew the admiration of community leaders, welfare groups, and the palace of the late monarch, Eze Vincent Ogbonnaya Okoro, whose cabinet — the Okpankpo Aro — recognized its value.

After a few years of operation, and thinking ahead about sustainability of the project, Dr Okoro and his pioneer team, particularly the editor, Mazi Ben Ezuma, worked out an arrangement with Nzuko Arochukwu meant to enhance circulation and marketing of the newspaper using the union’s branches as sales outlets. In the arrangement, publicity secretaries of the union were designated as representatives and appropriate sales commission was worked out. However, it was in 2005 that a major shift occurred when the then President-General of Nzuko Arochukwu Worldwide, Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi, was approached to help secure the future of the paper.

Chairman, Board of Directors

“The only way to sustain this good project,” Mazi Ivi recalls telling Dr. Okoro, “was to register it with the Corporate Affairs Commission so it would be legally structured and outlive us.”

With his guidance, the paper was registered with the CAC, introducing shareholding from the outset — a key step that would later allow broader community ownership. The Assistant Secretary-General of Nzuko Arochukwu Worldwide, Mazi Amaechi Emma Onyema, was equally designated to represent the union in Aro News Management to oversee the marketing arrangement via its branches that subsisted.

Privatization and the 2009 Turning Point

By 2009, as his tenure as President-General was coming to an end, Mazi Ivi pushed for privatization.

“I knew I would not be president forever,” he explains. “We needed to give it to the people — to call in investors, make it transparent, and ensure it was owned beyond one administration.”

This was consistent with the strategic vision of the founder, Mazi Azubike Okoro who had before proceeding overseas for his doctoral degree pursuit donated the project to Arochukwu kingdom in 2006, requesting that it should be managed for corporate Aro interests. The company’s original documents were received by His Majesty, Mazi Ogbonnaya Okoro himself and handed over to Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi after blessing same, directing that it should be prudently managed. Initial reactions were skeptical, but gradually shareholders came on board, including women and diaspora Aro indigenes.

Challenges, Struggles, and Sacrifices

Privatization was not without its hurdles. The years after 2009 saw:

Management disputes and attempted takeovers.

Mismanagement that drained resources.

Financial strain so severe that personal assets — including properties of Mazi Ivi and other leaders — were sold to keep the paper alive.

“Some of those who nearly destroyed the company are today back, seeking to be part of it,” he notes wryly. “But we learned from it — never again.”

Throughout these challenges, the board remained committed to transparency, zero debt, and community service.

Reforms and Compliance

In 2015, exactly 10 years after CAC registration, the company reviewed and updated its records to remain in full compliance. This process was repeated and strengthened in subsequent years.

Even when false filings were made against the company at CAC, the leadership resisted retaliatory legal action.

Mazi Ik Onu
Director

“Mistakes shouldn’t destroy a project like this,” says Mazi Ivi. “We focused on correcting the records and moving forward.”

By 2016, bureaucratic delays had slowed some reforms, but the board persisted, ensuring that Aro News was fully compliant and structurally sound.

A Milestone Year: The 2024 AGM and First Dividend

The 2024 Annual General Meeting marked a historic milestone. For the first time in its history, Aro News declared and shared dividends among its shareholders — a powerful signal that the paper had evolved into a sustainable, profit-making enterprise.

This shift demonstrated that community journalism can be profitable without losing its mission.

Set the editorial ethos of factual, culturally sensitive reporting. His belief in “journalism as a tool for unity and community progress” still guides the paper.

Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi – Chairman, Board of Directors

Barr Joy Chiori
Legal Advisor

Ugochukwu (Ugo) Okoro – Managing Editor
Based in Nigeria, Ugochukwu oversees the editorial and production heartbeat of Aro News, ensuring every edition reflects both local relevance and global interest.

He began as Production Editor and later became Managing Editor, starting with almost no funds but maintaining an unbroken production record. Traditionally publishing three editions yearly, the paper has experimented with special and extra editions to honour distinguished Aro personalities. Over time, a diverse and skilled team has helped the paper overcome numerous challenges.

“A few years ago, I and one of our directors, Mazi J.C. Imuoh, had a very serious accident on our way to Aro at Ovia River in Benin. Our vehicle was a write-off and we lost the whole production for that Ikeji period as well as other materials we were conveying to Aro. It was God that saved our lives because our car rammed into a Dangote truck. In that situation, we almost lost our lives. ”

Mazi Ugo Okoro
Managing Editor

The job also brings legal battles:

“One Aro man once sued us for a story we published, alongside Nzuko Aro in his territory. We spent money to defend ourselves. After the first case was thrown out of court, he sued us again and demanded millions — we also won that case.”

Today, Ugo says the paper is more focused, attracting new editorial members and potential investors eager to be part of its growth.

Under the brand of Aro News Book Series, it has four titles – ‘Perspectives on Aro History and Civilization: The Splendor of a Great Past’ Vols. 1, 2, 3 & 4 on sale via global outlets, including Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Lulu.com, etc.

The company also promotes Aro entrepreneurs and cultural figures through advertising — not just as a revenue stream, but as a way to showcase Aro talent worldwide.

Looking Ahead

With its roots deep in heritage and its reach extending across continents, Aro News stands today as a model of community-driven journalism.

As 30th Anniversary Beckons, Plans include:

Increasing publication frequency to quarterly.

Expanding diaspora partnerships.

Broadening advertising to include more Aro women and youth entrepreneurs.

Continuing strict transparency and accountability for shareholders.
Publishing a book to mark its three decades history

Mazi Ben Ezumah
Director

As Dr. Okoro puts it:

“We are not just reporting news; we are writing the history of our people.” And, the import of the dividend as approved by the board and paid to shareholders is not just in terms of quantum of money but what it symbolizes in terms of the viability and sustainability of Aro News as a generational project and a legacy of Arochukwu kingdom.“

Mazi Fidelis Nwosu
Director

And as Mazi Ivi concludes:

“So long as we live — and even after we are gone — Aro News will remain a legacy for the Aro people everywhere.”
