In a significant political development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor of Rivers State Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai, and former Governor of Osun State Rauf Aregbesola convened in Abuja on Thursday for a high-level stakeholders meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The gathering, which also included ADC National Chairman David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed, and former Minister of Digital Economy Isa Pantami, focused on strengthening the coalition’s unity and strategizing for the 2027 general elections.
Atiku Abubakar, in a post on his official 𝕏 handle, emphasized the meeting’s purpose as a collective effort to challenge the prevailing political establishment:
“I am currently at the stakeholders meeting of the Coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja. It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”
Key resolutions from the meeting included:
- Unanimous support for the ADC presidential candidate emerging from the party’s primaries.
- Directive for all members to resign from other political parties and commit fully to the ADC.
- Suspension of efforts to register the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), signaling the coalition’s focus on consolidating under the ADC platform.
- Announcement of primaries for Osun and Ekiti states ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections.
The ADC, originally founded in 2005 as the Alliance for Democratic Change and later registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2011, has become a central platform for opposition figures aiming to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections.
