Tragedy was on Wednesday averted when the convoy of Dr. Emeka Kalu, the Senatorial candidate in the 2027 Abia North Senatorial Zone election was attacked by unknown armed bandits.
One of the vehicles in the convoy was said to have suffered a “ballistic blast,” which was followed by sporadic shooting by unknown bandits.
A statement by Kalu, which was made available to journalists on Thursday, said that the convoy was attacked at around 12:30hrs on April 23, 2025 along the Anambra-Imo State Road en route to Abia State.
The statement described the attack as coordinated, which was aimed at dislodging the convoy.
The statement said: “In a coordinated attack to dislodge his convoy, one of the vehicles in his convoy suffered a ballistic blast. The blast followed a sporadic shooting by unknown bandits. However, the swift retaliatory response from his security details repelled the unknown attackers back to their hideouts and consequently ensured the safety of all persons in the convoy.
“The situation report from the police indicates that despite the severity of the attack, no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the matter, working to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.”
The statement hinted that the incident had raised serious concerns about the state of insecurity in the region and Nigeria as a whole, with suspicions pointing to suspected nonstate elements.
The unfortunate development has further sparked renewed calls by Kalu for a complete rejigging of the entire security architecture in the country and for serious and improved fight against insecurity in the region.
Kalu insisted that the security and welfare of the people was the primary purpose of government of the day.
