Nnamdi Kanu May Be Released Today As Court Convenes For Emergency Hearing

Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), may be granted bail today, December 2nd, 2021.

According to reports, the Biafra agitator has been scheduled for an emergency court hearing in the case between him and the Nigerian federal government.

Kanu is facing an amended seven-count charge of treasonable felony and acts of terrorism, which was brought against him by the government following his re-arrest and repatriation to Nigeria in June this year.

He has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), from which he attends his court hearings in Abuja under tight security.

Nnamdi Kanu, however, could be released on bail today, according to a reliable report on Wednesday citing a government lawyer involved in the case.
According to the source, the IPOB leader will appear in court tomorrow for an emergency hearing, during which his bail may be discussed.

“Nnamdi Kanu is set to appear in court tomorrow for an emergency hearing, which could result in his release on bail.

On Wednesday, a source was quoted as saying, “This is in response to Igbo elders’ requests for his release.”

When a delegation of Igbo leaders met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on November 19, 2021, led by former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, they requested Kanu’s unconditional release.

Despite the President’s description of their request as difficult, and despite the Nigerian leader’s declaration that interfering in Kanu’s trial would be illegal and contrary to the judiciary’s powers, he promised to investigate their request.

“You’ve placed a very difficult demand on me as the leader of this country,” Buhari said. Your request has far-reaching consequences. Nobody could say I’ve confronted or interfered with the work of the judiciary in the last six years since I became President. God has blessed you with a clear mind and a sharp memory at this age. Half your age group is already perplexed. However, your request is quite substantial. “I’ll take it into account.”
