OPINION: APGA Anambra State and the destructive politics of godfatherism

By Dr. Harris Chuma-Odili, FCMsp

In contemporary democracy, godfatherism has become a universal issue in the political development of many countries and states, Nigeria inclusive.

Unfortunately, the politics of godfatherism has enveloped every nooks and crannies of the nations body polity with its consequential effects retarding the socio-political growth and development of the country. Today, the ruling party in Anambra the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA is in the eye of the storm occasioned by the quest to impose a governorship aspirant on the party against the will of vast majority of the party members, especially at the grassroots level. The APGA might be ruined by choosing a wrong candidate, whose disloyalty may pave way for the opposition party to win the gubernatorial election on November 6.

The APGA party members should be allowed to make a choice of their own, godfatherism shouldn’t be allowed to bring an end to the reigns of APGA in Anambra state. People should be allowed to make their preferred choice. Our well cherised APGA shouldn’t come to an end because of the concept of godfatherism.

At this point, I presumed the leadership of APGA should be more rational than emotional, by not choosing a candidate that may lead to abysmal results in the upcoming guber election.

It’s my belief that there are absolute in our bill of right and they were put here in purpose by men who knew what words meant, and meant their prohibition to be absolute”(HUGO L. BLACK) he also uttered that, “loyalty must arise spontaneously from the heart of people who love their party and respect their government.”

It is pertinent to remind us all that the people of Anambra are looking up to APGA to uphold the tenets of internal democracy which has been the hallmark of the party since it came to power.

Let’s join hands together and continue to demand that equity, fairness and justice prevail in the All Progressives Grand Alliance. We should be thoughtful and think about the future of APGA and Ndi Anambra at large. Nothing has spoilt yet. There’s room for a fresh beginning. The wind of change is unstoppable.

Act now before it’s too late.
