Enugu Police Smash Car Theft Rings, Arrest Eight, Recover Eight Stolen Vehicles in Sweeping Crackdown
The Enugu State Police Command has intensified its onslaught against criminals, recording a series of major breakthroughs that shook multiple syndicates operating across the state.
Jungle-Journalist.Com reports that no fewer than eight suspects have been arrested in coordinated sting operations, while eight stolen or snatched vehicles, including high-end SUVs and other exhibits, have been recovered. The sweeping raids, carried out by specialized units of the Command in August, also led to the dismantling of gangs implicated in robbery, burglary, and car snatching across Enugu and neighboring states.
Trans-Ekulu Heist Cracked: Highlander Recovered in Awka
On 21st August, operatives of the SWAT unit nabbed Eze Obinna (44), Jideofor Igwumba (35), and Martina Okwor Ada (49) in a covert operation that led to the recovery of a Toyota Kluger (Highlander SUV) reported stolen from Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, on July 21. Jungle-Journalist.Com gathered that the stolen SUV had been refurbished and was being prepared for sale in Awka, Anambra State, when police struck.
Udi Night Raid: Criminal Gang Busted
Two days earlier, at about 1:30 a.m., Ozalla Division operatives intercepted a robbery gang along Udi/Ozalla Road, arresting Somadina Udeh (26) as others fled into the night. Their operational vehicle, a Toyota Hiace with Delta registration, was impounded, while another Toyota Hiace with Ebonyi registration—earlier stolen from Amokwe in Udi—was abandoned in their escape. The arrested suspect confessed to multiple burglaries and revealed that the gang regularly infiltrates Enugu from Anambra to loot shops and ferry stolen goods back for resale.
Car-Snatching Ring Falls in Independence Layout
In a separate sting on 12th August, Anti-Kidnapping operatives swooped on Chigozie Ebisike (42) in Ogui, recovering a blue Toyota Corolla. The arrest followed intelligence from the Command-and-Control Centre, which had earlier tracked the vehicle during a brazen daylight snatch of a Toyota Camry along Rangers Avenue on 3rd August. Interrogation of Ebisike opened the floodgates: police recovered two more stolen vehicles—a gold Toyota Sienna and a black Lexus 350, along with multiple registration documents, keys, and number plates linked to a car theft syndicate.
Robbery Trio Caged
Earlier, on 8th August, three suspects—Nwafor Chinenye (35), Chidera Ezeoha (32), and Ekete Joseph (41)—were arrested by the Crack Tactical Squad. The gang had terrorized Amokpu-Nike, snatching a Carter Tec Super motorcycle and a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone from their victims. Acting on intelligence, operatives tracked them to Ogbeke-Nike, where the stolen motorcycle and another were being displayed for sale. The suspects have since been arraigned and remanded in a correctional facility.
Command Vows Relentless Crackdown
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the gallantry of the operatives and assured residents that the crime-fighting heat will not relent. He urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
