“Policemen Have Right to Shoot at Unarmed Nigerians, Says Police Spokesperson, Adejobi”: Activist Replies IGP

I found a tweet from one Prince Adejobi the supposed policemen “Spokesperson” with the username @Princemoye1 responding to a tweet that “YES THE POLICE CAN SHOOT AT AN UNARMED MAN, IF HE IS A FLEEING SUSPECT WHO HAS COMMITTED A FELONY, OR INMATE WHO ESCAPED FROM A LAWFUL CUSTODY, or HE HAD COMMITTED a FELONIOUS OFFENCE , WHICH UPON CONVICTION, HE WOULD BE SENTENCED TO DEATH IR LIFE IMPRISONMENT Etc.

Let me start by enlightening those who doesn’t know the meaning of “Felony”.

Any criminal offense that results in a prison of one year or longer. They tend to be crimes that involve an element of violence and are considered harmful or dangerous to society. Felony crimes also include some of the most serious types of crimes that a person can commit, such as first-degree murder.

Regardless of this, let us not forget the person fleeing is still a “suspect” and not proven by the court of law, under the presumption of innocence in Nigeria law, Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

The Nigerian 1999 Constitution in section 36(5) states clearly that EVERY PERSON WHO IS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL OFFENSE SHALL BR PRESUMED TO BE INNOCENT UNTIL HE IS PROVED GUILTY.

With all of these I wonder why such a person from the police who is supposed to be the mouthpiece of the police to the press, public and the world will post such a thing, when I call for the reformation of Nigerian police force people will criticize me that I don’t know what I am talking about.

If the Nigerian Police-force was reformed this Adejobi won’t even make it to be Policeman Spokeperson, because he post without following the the Nigerian Police social media guideline.

This same person as reported by Premiumtimes Neespaper on the 16th of August 2022 flouted traffic rules without the Road Safety stopping him for flouting the traffic rules.

I am using this opportunity to reaffirm again that the Nigerian Police needs to be reform for a better policing and a safe Nigeria.
