President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to immediately implement measures to reduce the escalating cost of food across Nigeria.
The directive, disclosed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, comes as millions of Nigerians grapple with rising hardship worsened by inflation, transport costs, and insecurity since the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023.
🔍 Mounting Economic Pressure
Basic staples like rice, yam, and tomatoes have become unaffordable for many households, with the World Bank warning that over 100 million Nigerians risk food insecurity, especially in rural areas.
🚛 Key Interventions
According to Abdullahi, the FEC is focusing on reducing logistics costs, improving safe passage for agricultural produce, and rolling out two major initiatives:
- Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost productivity.
- Cooperative Reform Initiative to empower rural farmers through community-based systems.

Tinubu, who has repeatedly stressed a “Nigeria First” economic policy, says his administration is committed to achieving food sovereignty—ensuring sufficient, affordable, and nutritious food for all Nigerians.
