Twitter Unban: FG has shown it violated the rights of Nigerians- Group

*Says it’s January 20th case against FG still on

Foremost human rights group, One Love Foundation has said the lifting of it’s ban on Twitter by the Federal Government of Nigeria is an affirmation that it violated the rights of its own citizens.

Speaking through Samuel Ihensekhien Jnr, who is the group’s Legal Representative, it stated that it was happy with the lifting of ban, as its case against the FG on Twitter ban is billed to come up on 20th January.

Ihensekhien also said that the shutdown of Twitter for more than five months in Nigeria is a breach of the principle of access to communication, expression and internet service.

“We received with joy and mixed feelings today being the 12th January 2022, the Federal Government of Nigeria decision to lift and unban Twitter in Nigeria. We did assure everyone concerned at the preliminary state of Twitter ban suspension by FG that it will be upturned and in clear affirmation of our belief that twitter ban is illegal and unconstitutional. Now due to our strong advocacy as a group with other civil society groups, it has been upturned and Twitter social media site services restored to Nigeria.

“Consequently after consultation with the global president of One Love Foundation, Chief Patriot Patrick Osagie Eholor on the above, nothing as it concerns our ongoing case in Re: Patrick Eholor and others vs FRN on #Twitter ban ongoing and slated for judgement at the ecowas court on 20th January 2022 has changed.

“However no doubt this case has one way or the other contributed to the present positive situation. As a group, One Love Caring and Human Rights Foundation believes strongly in the different recognized international charters on freedom of expression, information and further the different local and municipal laws of Nigeria on right to internet access of all Nigerians.

“Our stand, still remains that the shutdown of Twitter incorporated operations before now and for more than five months in Nigeria is a breach of the principle of access to communication, expression and internet service. We thank you all, who joined in this noble cause for the restoration of Twitter service in nigeria.we also thanked those, whose constructive and other criticism at critical times, one way or the other shaped us.

“We are One Love Foundation. We are comitted to justice, equality and observance of every enshrined fundamental human rights of every person worldwide.once again, Thank you.
