Woman gives birth to twins with different dads after having sex with both on same day

A WOMAN gave birth to twins with two different fathers after having sex with them on the same day.

When the twins were eight months old, the mother took a DNA test with the man who was thought to be their father, however only one baby came back as a positive match. The mother is a 19-year-old woman, who did not wished to be named, from the small town of Mineiros, Brazil.

The mum reportedly said: “I remembered that I had had sex with another man and called him to take the test, which was positive.

“I was surprised by the results. I didn’t know this could happen and the babies are very similar.”

The woman’s doctor said that only around 20 other cases of the situation occurring have been documented worldwide.

The extremely rare phenomenon called heteroparental superfecundation sees a woman give birth to twins from two different fathers.

Speaking to Brazilian Broadcaster Globo, Dr Tulio Jorge Franco explained: “It is possible to happen when two eggs from the same mother are fertilised by different men.

“The babies share the mother’s genetic material, but they grow in different placentas.”

He added: “The pregnancy was super smooth, without any complications. The boys were born healthy and have never had health problems.

“It’s extremely rare. It happens once in a million. I never imagined that I would see such a case in my life.”

One of the men is reportedly legally registered as both of the children’s father, and helps to take care of them.

Their mother said: “He takes care of both of them, helps me a lot and gives them all the necessary support that they need.”

The twins are said to now be 16 months old according to reports by local media.

Although the condition is thought to be extremely rare, some studies have concluded that it may be more common than previously thought.

One study estimated that one in 400 twin births in the US resulted in heteroparental superfecundation.
