488 journalists are currently in jail across the world, 60 of them women – Reporters Without Borders

REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS (RSF), has revealed that 488 journalists are currently being held in prison around the world.

In an email sent to Jungle-Journalist.Com, RSF stated that 60 of the detained journalists are women.

In the email message, Christophe Deloire, RSF General Director stated:

“Dear friends, volunteers, donors, correspondents and administrators,

Dear team members,

The year is ending and it was an extraordinary one. The Taliban back in power in Afghanistan, a plane hijacked over Belarus, another military coup in Myanmar and a Great Leap Backwards for journalism in China, as our latest report analyses.

But thanks to you, we have worked tirelessly to come to the aid of journalists in danger and to defend the right to news and information. I am infinitely grateful to you.

With 488 journalists in prison around the world, 60 of them women, our annual round-up reflected a sad reality. Even if the number of journalists killed, 46, was the lowest in 20 years, it nonetheless means that an average of nearly one journalist a week is still being killed in connection with their work.

Fortunately, 2021 was also marked by a great development that encourages us to continue our fight. The decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to two leading journalists, to our friend Maria Ressa and to Dmitri Muratov, is an honour that moved us all.

So that we can expand our work, continue to organise evacuation operations, file lawsuits, carry out advocacy activities and pursue our initiatives with regard to digital challenges, we must take action in a united manner.

I thank every member of our team because you have managed to adapt, get moving again, and bolster our activities despite a difficult year. I am proud of you. Friends, volunteers, donors, correspondents and administrators – you can also be proud in the light of our results.
