Gunmen on Thursday night attacked the ever busy Onitsha-Owerri Federal road, setting ablaze over 10 vehicles alongside goods worth billions of naira.

According to Osazuwa Akonedo Blog, the deadly gunmen started the attack simultaneously in Ekwusigo area of Anambra State and Mgbidi community in Imo State around 11pm.

One of the cars was seen turned upsidedown, and completely burnt to ashes.

Tankers conveying crude oil were partially attacked and their tires deflated.

Many other trucks filled with goods were set on fire.

Between Amorka in Anambra state and Orlu junction at Mgbidi community in Imo state, several trucks, cars, luxurious buses, goods were also set ablaze.

Residents in the two locations said they heard sporadic gunshots between the hours of 11 pm on Thursday night till 4 a.m on Friday morning.

Some residents said no one was killed during the attack.

The residents said the unknown gunmen forced the passengers and drivers to disembark from the vehicles before setting the vehicles ablaze.

Some other residents faulted the claims that no life was lost during the attack.

The residents said some of the road users were kidnapped at Ekwusigo, and two persons have been killed.

“If you enter Azia community, through Onitsha-Owerri road, after the river, you will see two fresh dead bodies. It is unknown gunmen who took them, killed them and dumped their bodies there”, one of the residents said.
