WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app, is rolling out a new update through the Google Play Beta Program, bringing the version up to 2.23.5.12.

The update includes a new feature that is sure to be welcomed by many users. Especially those who are part of large group chats. The feature replaces phone numbers with push names within the chat list when you receive a message from an unknown contact in a group chat.

The usernames will replace phone numbers on WhatsApp.

According to Wabetainfo, this feature was first introduced in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.25.10 update. The initial update swapped phone numbers by usernames within the message bubble in group chats. Making it easier to recognize messages from unknown contacts within your group chats. With the latest update, WhatsApp has extended this feature to the chat list.

The push name will now replace the phone number within the chat list. Making it easier for users to understand who the unknown contact is. Without having to save the number as a new contact. This is particularly useful in large group chats where it can be difficult to identify unknown group members. The push name may also appear instead of the phone number in different sections of the app, such as the group participants list.

While the feature has been released to some iOS beta testers after installing the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.5.0.73 update, it does not imply that the phone number is hidden for group members as it is still visible within the chat bubble.

The new feature is currently available to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Play Store. It is expected to be released to more users over the coming days. Hopefully, we will able to communicate only through usernames in the app in the future.

Overall, this update is sure to be a welcome change for many WhatsApp users who have struggled with identifying unknown contacts in group chats. The push name feature will undoubtedly make group chats easier to manage and make communication more efficient. We will continue to monitor WhatsApp’s updates and bring you the latest news on any further developments.
