CLO Mourns a Dogged Human Rights Advocate and Defender, Comrade Michael Onyema Odiegwu

The Civil Liberties Organisation ((CLO), Enugu Branch regrets the painful passage of a
renown and dogged human rights advocate and defender Comrade Michael Onyema Odiegwuwhom until his death was its Campaign/Publicity Secretary. According to information from his
family, Comrade Odiegwu died on the 25 of November 2024 following complications resulting from a road accident he had earlier in the year.

Comrade Onyema Odeigwu was a deeply committed human right advocate and defender who joined the CLO over 25 years ago and rose to hold various positions in the Enugu Branch Executive Committee of the organisation. He was so selflessly involved in CLO activities in defence of the rights of the helpless and downtrodden even onto the time of his death. His
persistent advocacy for good governance and an ideal society is widely attested to by all those who knew and met him.

It is unfortunate to note that comrade Odiegwu died due to poor health care and lack of
economic facilities to obtain him better treatment after the accident, both of which are
consequences of poor governance- societal vices which Comrade Odiegwu spent a better part of
his life struggling to correct in the Nigerian society. If subsisting Nigerian Governments at the
local, state and federal levels had paid adequate attention to the improvement of the economic wellbeing of its people, we believe that Comrade Michael Odiegwu would still been with us
today.

The death of Comrade Odiegwu is another call on governments in Nigeria to pay more attention to provision of basic amenities, quality and affordable health care and human economic empowerment in order to save its workforce from unnecessary suffering and untimely death.

It is a pity that we have to say REST IN POWER to our dear Comrade Michael Onyema
Odiegwu. The society you loved, lived for, advocated for, defended and served will miss you.
