Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has pulled off the unthinkable—reviving Nigergas Company Limited, a once-mighty industrial plant that had been left for dead for over 30 years.

Established in 1962 under the leadership of the late Dr. Michael Okpara, Nigergas was abandoned due to mismanagement, nepotism and corruption. But on Thursday, Jungle-Journalist.Com gathered, the governor unveiled a fully modernised and expanded plant in Emene, positioning it as a new hub for jobs, healthcare, and industrial growth in the Southeast.

“This is not just pipes and machines,” Mbah declared. “This is about restoring dignity, productivity, and reviving the lost promise of Eastern Nigeria’s industrial greatness.”

A Giant Roars Back

With upgraded facilities, Nigergas will now produce 100 cubic metres of oxygen and 45 cubic metres of acetylene every hour, and is preparing to roll out nitrogen, argon gas, carbon dioxide and CNG stations.

Already, more than 100 skilled and semi-skilled workers have been employed, while 5,000 more jobs are expected to emerge across distribution, fabrication, transportation and supply chains.

Oxygen for Hospitals, Fuel for Industries

The revived factory will supply medical oxygen to hospitals, acetylene to welders, and industrial gases to agro-processors and manufacturers, cutting production costs and saving lives.

“Reliable oxygen saves lives, affordable industrial gases keep our factories alive. This is how Enugu rebuilds,” Mbah said.

Mbah Hailed as “Nehemiah of Our Time”

Health consultant Dr. Joy Uduji praised the governor as “the Nehemiah of our time”, likening him to the biblical builder of Jerusalem’s broken walls.

Nollywood veteran Kanayo O. Kanayo also lauded him, noting that “security is working in Enugu,” as film crews now stay out at night without fear.

Community leaders, engineers, and traditional rulers echoed the sentiment, describing the rebirth of Nigergas as a landmark achievement in Enugu’s industrial history.
