The ancient Kingdom of Arochukwu is set to host the 2025 Ikeji Festival — a historic 17-day cultural pilgrimage themed: “Aro Renaissance – Celebrating 100 Years of Omu Aro as a Symbol of Aro Culture and Identity.”

This year’s edition is momentous, marking the centenary of the sacred Omu Aro Insignia. It unfolds under the visionary leadership of His Eminence, Eze Aro, Dr. Eberechukwu Oji, presiding over his second Ikeji since ascending the throne.

The Central Planning Committee (CPC), working with the Abia State Government, is pushing to secure UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition for Ikeji Aro.

The festival calendar opens on Monday, September 8, 2025 (Afor Okpo na Aza Awada) and reaches its climax on Friday, September 26, 2025 (Ekekpe Aro-Okeigbo – Cultural Carnival).

In his royal invitation, Eze Aro, Dr. Oji, declared: “Celebrating 100 years of Omu Aro is more than honoring tradition — it is building a future, reigniting Aro identity, and passing our heritage to the next generation.”

100 Years of Omu Aro

At the heart of Ikeji 2025 is a tribute to Dr. T.K. Utchay, the Aro patriot and philosopher who, in 1925, transformed the humble omu (palm frond) into a powerful emblem of unity, peace, and defense.

This year, a centennial plaque will honor four Aro patriots:

• Dr. T.K. Utchay
• Mazi S.W.O. Okereke
• Mazi Mbonu Ojike
• Mazi Ozumba Mbadiwe

A Living Heritage

The Ikeji Festival is more than celebration — it marks the yam harvest, closes the farming season, and opens the Aro New Year. It is a sacred season, free from conflict, burials, or mourning, dedicated to gratitude, renewal, and cultural unity.

The Aro Confederacy

Emerging after the Aro-Ibibio Wars (13th century), the Aro Confederacy became a political, spiritual, and commercial powerhouse.

Its spiritual center, the Ibini Ukpabi Oracle (misnamed “Long Juju”), was a divine tribunal whose reach spread across Eastern Nigeria and beyond.

Though challenged by the Anglo-Aro War (1901–1902), which saw the British assault on Arochukwu, the Aro spirit and culture endured — surviving colonial disruption and retaining its global influence.

Diaspora and Global Reach

Today, Aro influence stretches across 350 communities in Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.

Each year, the Aro diaspora returns home to renew ancestral bonds and celebrate heritage.

Festival Objectives: Aro Renaissance & Omu Aro Celebration

• Cultural Revival: Positioning Omu Aro as a living emblem of identity.
• Community Development: Embedding Aro values of mentorship, enterprise, and reverence for elders.
• Youth Empowerment: Through Eze Aro Youth Enterprise Empowerment Programme (EAYEEP).
• Diaspora Reunification: Rekindling ties with global Aro communities.
• Religious Tourism: Featuring interdenominational worship and ancestral thanksgiving.

Festival Highlights

• Youth Program: 19 new EAYEEP candidates (one per village) to be unveiled; six alumni to get ₦200,000 each.
• Cultural Documentation: Full audio-visual archive for UNESCO nomination.
• Diaspora Engagement: Over 10 diaspora troupes confirmed.
• Entertainment: Traditional dance competitions, plus Swange Dance (Benue) and Ekombi Dance (Cross River).

CPC Coordination

According to Mazi Dr. Azubike Okoro, media boss for Ikeji Aro 2025, the Central Planning Committee led by Barr. Oscar Chukwuma Okoro (Chair) and Mazi Zulu Ofoelue (Secretary) has set up sub-committees for:
