The traditional ruler of Idumuje Unor in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty Obi Charles Chukwunweike Anyasi III, has affirmed that the Anioma people of Delta North are Igbos and should be recognized as such within Nigeria’s geopolitical framework.

Speaking on TVC’s special interview programme Behind the Headlines, Obi Anyasi III said that while some groups claim alternative ancestries, “Aniomas are statutorily Igbos,” backing Senator Ned Nwoko’s classification of the people.

Tracing the origin of the term “Anioma,” the monarch explained that it was coined by Sir Dennis Osadebay, who drew the acronym from Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika, and Oshimili—later refined with additional letters for poetic effect.

According to him, Anioma land spans about 6,000 square kilometres with a population of nearly two million people, blessed with a strong workforce, industries, rich culture, and heritage.

On the long-standing demand for Anioma State, Obi Anyasi recalled that the agitation began as far back as 1954 under the Lyttleton Constitution, with Sir Osadebay as its chief advocate. He noted that the movement has passed through “nine phases of agitation” and gained renewed energy since Senator Ned Nwoko introduced a bill for Anioma State creation in the 10th Senate.

“The agitation represents a natural desire you cannot take away from the people,” the monarch stressed.

When asked about which zone Anioma State should belong to, he said personal preference leaned towards the South-South, but political realities may place it in the South-East to balance Nigeria’s federal structure.

“The dividends of democracy will come closer with Anioma state creation,” he added, stressing that the people should not fear change but embrace the future.

He also commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State for his development efforts, while emphasizing that the yearning for Anioma State reflects an inexhaustible desire for self-determination and equitable representation.

Described during the interview as a royal father who embodies both tradition and modern aspirations, Obi Anyasi III said Anioma’s recognition as a state would not only reflect its historical identity but also help balance Nigeria’s geopolitical structure.
