The Labour Party has unveiled a new initiative tagged Nigeria Civil Rights Yellow Page (NCS-YP), aimed at safeguarding activists, journalists, and human rights defenders across the country. This comes in the wake of the controversial clash between former Labour Party chairman, Julius Abure, and activist Ms. Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, at the Abuja Airport on September 27.
According to a press release issued Friday, October 3, 2025, by Prince Tony Akeni, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Nigerians were urged to revisit the first video of the incident to understand what transpired without bias. The statement noted that the verbal exchange between Mama Pee and Abure escalated only when Abure’s younger brother, John Abure, allegedly hurled the insult: “Are you mad?”
The party argued that no crime had been committed at that point, citing precedents such as Bakare v. Ishola and Ibeanu v. Uba, where the courts ruled that angry insults amount to “vulgar abuse,” not defamation. The Labour Party also drew parallels with U.S. law, describing the exchanges as “rhetorical hyperbole.”
However, the statement stressed that the real crime occurred aboard the Max Air flight and at the Benin Airport, where Mama Pee was allegedly assaulted by a mob of youths “mobilized by the Abures.” The party thanked Edo State Police Commissioner, CP Monday Agbonika, for intervening to prevent what it called the “unjust detention” of Mama Pee.
In a show of solidarity, the Labour Party hailed Mama Pee’s courage, placing her alongside figures like Femi Falana (SAN), King Dele Farotimi, Peter Akah, and others who have stood firm against bad governance. “If only 5% of Nigerian youths have the outstanding courage of Mama Pee, Nigeria would have been free many years ago,” the statement declared.
Looking ahead to 2027, the party announced the launch of Project Yellow Page, a nationwide directory of activists, journalists, civil rights defenders, women’s rights groups, environmental advocates, and child protection campaigners. Compiled state by state and LGA by LGA, the directory will provide rapid-response contacts and networks to mobilize legal, social, and emergency support for those under threat.
