INEC Chairman Amupitan Resumes Office Next Week

The newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), will officially assume office next week, ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, Jungle Journalist Media Ltd reports.

Amupitan’s assumption of office follows his recent confirmation by the Senate, after being nominated by President Bola Tinubu. His first major assignment will be to oversee preparations for the crucial Anambra governorship poll — a key early test of his leadership of the electoral body.

The Anambra State governorship election is expected to hold on Saturday, November 8, 2025, and the incumbent, Professor Charles Soludo will be facing strong contenders in the other parties, including the All Progressives Congress which is the ruling party at the national level.

According to Punch Newspaper, the incoming INEC boss will take over from acting chairman Mohammed Kudu Haruna. His resumption is expected to signal a new phase for the Commission, which faces heightened expectations to restore public trust and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Stakeholders and civic groups have urged Prof. Amupitan to “hit the ground running” and deliver a transparent election that can serve as a model for future polls. In its analysis, Jungle Journalist Media Ltd notes that Amupitan’s appointment offers “a chance to reset INEC’s reputation and reaffirm confidence in its independence.”

A former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, Amupitan is a respected legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Observers, including TheCable, believe his legal background could help strengthen electoral integrity and institutional reforms at INEC.
