Imeoha Nkerefi: A Festival of Culture, Gratitude and Vision
The serene community of Imeoha Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State was transformed into a hub of colour, dance and unity as indigenes and guests gathered for the 2025 New Yam Festival (Iri Ji). It was a celebration that went beyond feasting — a blend of deep-rooted culture, royal compassion and visionary leadership under His Royal Highness, Igwe Luke Ogbu Ogbuta Okorie, the Ezeanyanyaanaecheoha I of Imeoha Nkerefi Autonomous Community.
The festival, held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, brought together the people of Nkerefi Land in one joyful rhythm — honouring the harvest, renewing bonds, and reaffirming faith in a brighter collective future.
Royal Communiqué
Ahead of the 2025 New Yam Festival, the Eze-in-Council of Imeoha Nkerefi issued a communiqué reaffirming its traditional and cultural authority within the Imeoha Autonomous Community.
The statement declared that “Imeoha Nkerefi remains the only recognized traditional authority empowered by law and heritage to organize and oversee cultural festivals within its domain, including the annual Iri Ji celebration.”
The Council warned that any attempt by individuals or groups within Imeoha to host or duplicate such events without palace consent would constitute “a gross violation of the ancestral order and an affront to constituted authority.”
It clarified that the directive applies solely to Imeoha Nkerefi, one of the four autonomous communities that make up Nkerefi, while encouraging harmony among Amofu, Ohuani, and Enuogu.
The communiqué urged all Nkerefi sons and daughters to uphold unity, discipline, and mutual respect.
“Imeoha Palace is not a political platform but a cultural sanctuary entrusted with the spiritual welfare of its people,” it read in part.
It concluded that “the peace and dignity of Imeoha are not negotiable; they are inherited duties that must be upheld by every true son and daughter of the community.”
₦6.2 Million Bursary and Education Support
In an inspiring show of philanthropy, Igwe Ogbuta Okorie marked both the festival and his birthday by announcing a ₦6.2 million bursary and education support fund for over 62 brilliant students across Nkerefi’s four autonomous communities.
“Instead of feasting alone, we invest in the destiny of our children,” the monarch declared to thunderous applause. “Education is the light that will keep Nkerefi shining — and by God’s grace, we will continue to build that future.”
The royal gesture reinforced his family’s long-standing tradition of transforming festive joy into empowerment and opportunity.

Health, Infrastructure and the Smart Green School Vision
Igwe Ogbuta Okorie also reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing medical outreach projects that have provided free healthcare services across Enugu, Abia and Lagos States. “We will do even more,” he promised, “and we invite professionals and partners to join hands with us.”
He further unveiled his plan to establish a Smart Green School in Imeoha Nkerefi — a modern learning institution that would bring education closer to home, reduce hardship for parents, and nurture a new generation of innovators.
The monarch extended heartfelt appreciation to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his “compassionate leadership and inclusiveness,” especially in appointing Nkerefi sons and daughters into positions of trust and extending developmental projects to the area.
“Your Excellency, we thank you sincerely for what you’ve done and continue to do for Nkerefi,” the royal father said. “But like Oliver Twist, we humbly ask for more — for improved rural roads, clean water, a fully equipped health centre, and the siting of a higher institution such as a College of Education, Health Sciences, Agriculture or Polytechnic of Innovation in Nkerefi.”
According to the Igwe, Nkerefi’s growing population, central location and vast land resources make it ideal for such a project that could anchor an education–innovation corridor for Enugu State.
Airport Vision and Industrial Expansion
In alignment with Enugu State’s investment drive, the royal father also appealed for consideration of an international airport or auxiliary aviation facility within the Nkerefi axis. He noted that Nkerefi’s topography offers extensive stretches of land ideal for long-term aviation and logistics infrastructure capable of stimulating agro-export, manufacturing, tourism, and regional connectivity across the South East.
He reaffirmed that the community is ready to provide land, security and logistical support whenever the state government deems such a strategic project timely.
Additionally, Igwe Ogbuta Okorie reaffirmed Imeoha Nkerefi’s partnership with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, describing it as a gateway to agro-industrial development and youth empowerment. “Our land is open to investors in renewable energy, light manufacturing and agro-processing,” he said, “and our people are ready for genuine, sustainable progress.”
Thanksgiving and Cultural Splendour
The celebration climaxed on Sunday, October 26, 2025, with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Imeoha Nkerefi, attended by dignitaries and well-wishers from across Enugu State.
Hon. Frank Anioma, who represented Governor Peter Mbah, conveyed the government’s goodwill to the community, commending the Igwe for combining tradition with developmental advocacy. Also in attendance were traditional rulers including HRH Igwe Michael Ogbonnaya of Ishienu Autonomous Community and HRH Igwe Onukwube of Enuogu Autonomous Community, alongside the Imeoha Palace Council and Traditional Council Chiefs.
The success of the event owed much to the dedication of the Iri Ji Planning Committee led by Dr. Patrick Njoku, whose leadership ensured flawless organization and hospitality. The Head of Media and Publicity, Hon. Chukwudi Bernard, and the Imeoha Development Union (IDU) team provided robust coordination and communication support that gave the celebration its polished, memorable character.
Royal Blessing and Closing Prayers
In his closing message, Igwe Ogbuta Okorie offered prayers of gratitude to God and blessings upon the land and its people. “May peace dwell in Nkerefi; may our barns overflow; may our youths rise and shine,” he said. He also paid tribute to his wife for her lifelong compassion and leadership in charity, and to the chiefs, clergy, youths, and security agencies who made the event a success.
“May God bless Nkerefi, bless Enugu State, and bless the government under His Excellency, Barrister Peter Ndubuisi Mbah,” the Igwe prayed.
Imeoha Nkerefi Rising
As the music faded and the yam fires cooled, Imeoha Nkerefi stood tall — proud of its heritage, sure of its future. Under HRH Igwe Luke Ogbu Ogbuta Okorie, the community is not only preserving its cultural roots but also nurturing a new era of education, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Indeed, Imeoha Aeku!
Imeee Nkerefi!
Imeee Enugu State!
Imeee Nigeria!
