A viral claim circulating on Facebook alleging that United States President Donald Trump is considering granting independence to Biafra has been debunked, with no evidence supporting the statement attributed to him.
The posts, which emerged in November 2025, claim Trump said he was “seriously considering” granting Biafra freedom as a solution to insecurity in Nigeria. They also allege that members of the US Congress have submitted a proposal to support Biafra’s independence.
Biafra, located in Nigeria’s southeast, attempted to secede in 1967, sparking a 30-month civil war before being reintegrated into the country in 1970. Decades later, agitation for self-determination persists, notably through groups such as the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The viral posts present supposed quotes from Trump, portraying him as endorsing Biafra’s independence and suggesting the US might intervene in Nigeria’s internal crisis. However, a close review reveals no credible evidence that Trump made any such remarks.
Trump, who frequently publishes his major statements on his Truth Social platform, has not issued any comment related to Biafra’s independence. A search of his public posts shows no reference to the claim, and no reputable media outlet—local or international—has reported any such policy consideration.
While Trump recently described Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and accused radical Islamist groups of targeting Christians, his remarks sparked strong pushback from the Nigerian government, which rejected his claims and defended the country’s sovereignty. Yet none of his statements referenced Biafra or any proposal to recognise its independence.
Given the absence of official statements, congressional records, or media reports, the circulating posts are false. There is no indication that the US government or its lawmakers are pursuing any action regarding Biafra’s independence.
