The Federal Government has commissioned a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Enugu, just a week after opening a similar facility in Yola, Adamawa State. This latest development is part of the World Bank-supported Livestock Productivity and Resilience Project (L-PRES) aimed at boosting Nigeria’s livestock sector.
On Tuesday, 2nd December 2025, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, emphasized that the Renewed Hope Agenda is driving real progress with improved livestock infrastructure, enhanced veterinary services, and expanded support for livestock farmers nationwide. So far, seven modern veterinary hospitals have been completed across Nigeria, with 14 more in progress.
The Enugu State Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, representing Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, lauded the Federal Government for strengthening veterinary services in the Southeast. He urged collaboration between the new hospital and Enugu State University to enhance veterinary education, boost livestock productivity, and stimulate economic growth.
Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, highlighted that the facility’s advanced equipment will improve animal diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care—key components for healthier animals and stronger livelihoods.
Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, explained the hospital will operate a hybrid model involving both private and state veterinary professionals to ensure sustainability and wider service coverage, fostering a strong public-private partnership aligned with global best practices.
Later the same day, the Minister broke ground for the Enugu State Integrated Livestock Centre in Ubahu-Nkanu East LGA, a flagship project designed as a 15,000-cattle ranch. This initiative aims to transition from open grazing to modern commercial ranching, enhancing food security, attracting investment, creating jobs, and establishing Enugu as a major hub for meat production and export.
The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders including the World Bank’s Co-Task Team Leader for L-PRES, Dr. Chidozie Anyiro, Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Patrick Ubru, federal ministry directors, and leaders from veterinary and animal science associations.
