Burkina Faso’s military authorities have confirmed the detention of 11 Nigerian military officers and the seizure of a Nigerian Air Force C130 transport aircraft after it made an emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso on December 8, 2025. The incident has sparked regional tension, with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali—condemning the unauthorized entry into Burkinabe airspace.
According to the AES statement released late Monday, the Nigerian aircraft was forced to land following an in-flight emergency. Onboard were two crew members and nine passengers, all identified as personnel of the Nigerian armed forces. The alliance stressed that the aircraft had no authorization to operate in Burkinabe territory, describing the event as a violation of sovereignty and international aviation law.
Burkinabe authorities immediately opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the flight. Preliminary findings revealed that the Nigerian Air Force plane had not received clearance to fly over the country. In response, the AES announced that its member states had placed their air defense and anti-aircraft systems on maximum alert, authorizing the neutralization of any aircraft that violates their airspace.
The statement emphasized that the measures were taken to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the confederation, as well as the safety of its populations. “Faced with this unfriendly act carried out in disregard of international law and international civil and/or military aviation regulations, measures have been taken to guarantee the security of the confederal airspace,” the AES declared.
The incident comes at a time of heightened regional security concerns. The AES, formed by military regimes in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, has positioned itself as a bloc resisting external influence, particularly from Western powers and ECOWAS. By placing their forces on high alert, the three countries signaled readiness to confront what they perceive as external threats to their sovereignty.
Nigeria, a key member of ECOWAS, has yet to issue an official response to the detention of its officers. Analysts suggest that the development could strain already fragile relations between Nigeria and the AES states, especially given ongoing disagreements over regional security cooperation and political legitimacy.
Observers note that the seizure of a military aircraft and detention of officers is a rare and provocative move, underscoring the AES’s determination to assert control over its airspace. The unfolding situation is expected to draw international attention, with calls likely for diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation.
At present, the detained Nigerian personnel remain in custody in Burkina Faso, while investigations continue into the reasons behind the unauthorized flight.
