In a daring crackdown, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 44 suspected internet fraudsters in Ebonyi and Anambra states.
The operation, carried out by the Enugu Zonal Directorate, unfolded in the early hours of September 28 and 29, 2024, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to online criminal activities ¹.
As investigators dug deeper, the EFCC said operatives uncovered a web of deceit, with some suspects exploiting social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to swindle unsuspecting victims.
The suspects employed cunning tactics, including fake identities, to lure foreign nationals into romantic scams, while others possessed fraudulent documents on their devices.
The EFCC’s swift action yielded a cache of incriminating items, including laptops and sophisticated mobile phones.
These findings paint a disturbing picture of the extent of online fraud in Nigeria, highlighting the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public.
This latest crackdown comes on the heels of previous successes by the EFCC, including the conviction of 41 internet fraudsters in Anambra state and 24 in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.
