Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, faces up to 17 years in prison following his conviction for tax evasion on Thursday.
In a federal court in Los Angeles, Mr. Biden pleaded guilty to three felony counts and six misdemeanors related to tax offenses. The court accepted his plea.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 16, 2024.
In a statement released after his guilty plea, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Mr. Biden “willfully failed to file his 2017 and 2018 tax returns on time; and when he finally submitted his 2018 return, he included false business deductions to reduce the substantial tax liability he incurred by February 2020,” among other offenses.
The statement further noted, “At sentencing, Hunter Biden faces a maximum penalty of 17 years in prison, although actual sentences for federal crimes are usually less than the maximum allowed.”
A federal district court judge will determine the sentence, considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
