Enugu-born youth leader, Hon. Monday Diamond Ani has showered praise on Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for fully sponsoring the burial of legendary footballer, Chairman Christian Chukwu (MFR).
Ani, also known as Odoziobodo and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Subcommittee of the Central Planning Committee, described the Governor’s intervention as “a profound honour” to the late football icon and a reassurance that elder statesmen in Enugu are not forgotten.
“By singlehandedly providing all the funds required for Chairman Christian Chukwu’s burial, Gov. Mbah has shown deep respect for those who served this state and nation diligently. He is giving hope to families that their sacrifices will always be rewarded with honour,” Ani said.
Ani, who is also a Commonwealth Award recipient, noted that the Governor’s gesture went beyond the burial. During the Night of Tribute held on August 13 at the International Conference Centre, Gov. Mbah pledged to take care of the welfare of more than 120 surviving ex-Rangers players, with monthly stipends and healthcare packages.
According to Ani, this move sets a new standard for leadership. “This unprecedented commitment deserves commendation. I pray for God’s grace and guidance upon the Governor as he continues to pilot the affairs of the state with excellence,” he added.
Christian Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, and his burial attracted tributes from far and wide. But to Ani, the Governor’s support ensured that the farewell was not only befitting but also historic in setting a legacy of honour for sports heroes.
