At over seventy years of age, Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi speaks with the calm assurance of a man who has lived through Arochukwu’s seasons of hardship, resilience, and renewal. From the “darkness” of his childhood to the brighter days now unfolding in his homeland, his story is not just personal — it mirrors the transformation of the Aro Kingdom itself.
“I have seen the darkness in Arochukwu. I have seen the bright days, the brighter days, and now I am seeing even brighter days ahead,” he recalls with visible pride. For him, the journey of his community is one of steady rebirth, reclaiming its lost glory and stepping into a future defined by development, peace, and cultural pride.
Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi has not just watched this transformation from the sidelines. He has been a leading hand in shaping it. Over the decades, he has served in numerous capacities, including as President-General of Nzuko Aro Worldwide, a role that placed him at the center of community mobilization. He describes his service as a privilege: “All the services we have been rendering are purely pro bono. For me, it is a privilege being called to serve my people.”
Service in a Demanding Community
Serving Aro people, he notes, is never an easy task. “Aro people are very smart, very intelligent, well-traveled people. You need to be extraordinarily careful in serving them. You must understand what they want and do your best to satisfy them.”
Despite the weight of expectation, he says, the essence of leadership is simple: delivering what improves lives, ensures peace, and strengthens the community. That philosophy has guided him through roles spanning both traditional and union leadership.
Arochukwu Reclaims Its Lost Glory
In his view, Arochukwu today is not the Arochukwu of his childhood. He describes a kingdom in transition, propelled by quality leadership at all levels. At the heart of this transformation, he points to the reign of His Eminence, Eze Aro, Dr. Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, whose humility, competence, and exposure have brought visible change to the kingdom.
“Ever since he came as Eze Aro, things changed. Everywhere you go, you see progress, you see development,” he says.
He also highlights the influence of Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, whose rise, alongside the Eze Aro, he believes is providential: “It looks like it is just God’s working — bringing two intellectuals together, one serving at the state level, the other at the kingdom level. With both working together, things are improving everywhere in Arochukwu and Abia State.”
Reconciling Leadership Disputes
Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi was deeply involved in the coronation process of the current Eze Aro, serving as Coordinating Chairman of the Selection Committee. He insists the process was transparent and accountable. Although some contestants, such as Prince Godwin Idei, expressed grievances afterward, reconciliation efforts have since brought most dissenters back into the fold.
“There can never be a community or nation where 100 percent accept the leadership. But what is important is that the process was in order, and it was,” he explains, adding that disagreements should not destroy families, communities, or kingdoms.
Looking Ahead With Hope
Asked whether the reign of His Eminence has met expectations, his response is emphatic: “In less than two years, he has achieved what previous leaders could not do in 24 years. Even those who opposed him before now say, ‘This man is the best of them all.’”
As for the season of celebration Arochukwu is currently observing, Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi sees it as more than festivity. To him, it is a season of love, reconciliation, reunion, and renewal — a time when cultural values are proudly displayed and the bonds of community are strengthened.
Advice to the Younger Generation
Reflecting on the future, he tells the youth that they are far more privileged than his own generation, having access to electricity, renewable energy, internet, and mobile technology. But privileges must be matched with responsibility.
“My advice to them: listen to those who have seen the worst days. Be patient, obey the laws of the land, respect God and elders, and buy into your family culture if it is good. Uphold entrepreneurship, honesty, dignity, and integrity. Show character, work hard, and respect authority,” he urges.
For Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi, the story of Arochukwu is a story of resilience and progress. Having seen both the struggles of the past and the triumphs of the present, he believes the best is yet to come — and that the younger generation must carry the torch of service and integrity forward.
