Tension has again erupted in the controversial Enugu Centenary City land, as one person was reportedly killed and several others injured when armed militia allegedly sponsored by Private Estates International West Africa (PEIWA) invaded the site on Friday.
Eyewitnesses told Jungle-Journalist.Com that the attackers, who arrived in a Sienna bus accompanied by some policemen, stormed the disputed land and ordered workers from Obeagu community to vacate immediately.
The gunmen, said to be wearing charms, opened fire to scare the villagers and allegedly used machetes on those who resisted. One of the victims, identified as Onyedika Chukwu Ede, a native of Ndinwuba village, Obeagu Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area, was fatally stabbed in the abdomen and died before receiving medical attention.
A community leader who spoke under anonymity accused PEIWA of using violence and intimidation to suppress the people of Obeagu, despite ongoing court cases over ownership of the land.
“This attack was carried out by armed militia working for PEIWA. They came to forcefully stop our people from working on our community project site,” the source said.
The latest incident occurred just days after officials of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) visited the area to mark several buildings for demolition.
It would be recalled that the Enugu State House of Assembly had recently intervened in the dispute, adopting a resolution that outlined a peaceful resolution process — a move the Obeagu community reportedly accepted and was awaiting implementation.
Despite the legislative intervention and multiple pending court cases, reports of violence, harassment, and intimidation continue to trail the Centenary City land.
