Nigeria’s opposition political space has been jolted by the resignation of Senator Prince Gilbert Emeka Nnaji from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years, as he officially joins the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in what many observers describe as the deepening “Peter Obi political tsunami” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Nnaji, a former senator representing Enugu East and ex-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications, announced his exit in a resignation letter dated December 26, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of his Umuenwene Ward, Iji-Nike, Enugu State.
In the letter, the lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations, adding that recent developments had convinced him the PDP had “become as irredeemable as it is irreparable.”
“The PDP of the founding fathers was built on unity, patriotism, justice, fairness and transparency,” Nnaji wrote. “Unfortunately, the party has drifted far from those ideals, leaving me with no option than to seek a better platform to continue contributing to national development.”
He disclosed that he has now found a new political home in the ADC, which he described as a credible and promising platform populated by “great and motivated like-minded compatriots” determined to redirect Nigeria’s political trajectory.
Nnaji’s defection comes amid mounting anticipation of Peter Obi’s official move to the ADC, scheduled for December 31, 2025, a development widely expected to galvanise opposition forces and trigger further high-profile defections across the country.
Political analysts say Nnaji’s exit from the PDP is part of a broader realignment driven by Obi’s growing influence and the search for a unified opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027. The ADC has increasingly emerged as the rallying point for this coalition, attracting politicians disenchanted with the internal crises rocking the major parties.
Sources within the ADC confirm that several prominent figures from the South-East and other regions are set to formally declare for the party alongside Obi before the end of the year, a move expected to significantly boost the party’s national profile.
For the PDP, Nnaji’s resignation represents another major blow, particularly in Enugu State, where internal divisions have weakened the party’s cohesion.
As December 31 approaches, all eyes remain on Peter Obi’s formal entry into the ADC, a moment many believe could redefine Nigeria’s opposition politics and reshape the battle lines ahead of 2027.
