Obi To Join ADC

As Nigeria’s political landscape heats up in preparation for the 2027 general elections, fresh reports have emerged suggesting that former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi is on the verge of defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)

According to a December 27, 2025, report in *Punch Newspapers*, an unnamed senior ADC official in Abuja claimed that Obi has finalized plans to formally join the party. The source alleged that Obi intends to make his declaration at a major rally in Enugu—described as the political capital of the South-East—on December 31, 2025. Supporters and loyalists are reportedly already mobilizing for the event, and Obi recently met with ADC National Chairman David Mark to reaffirm his commitment.

The rumored move comes after weeks of tension. Earlier in December, the ADC publicly urged Obi to “make up his mind” about joining, following comments attributed to him describing the party as “unstable.” Obi’s media team later denied he made those remarks, expressing continued confidence in the coalition.

However, official confirmation is lacking. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told reporters that while consultations are ongoing, there is “no official announcement yet.” Similarly, the coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, deferred comment to Obi himself.

The Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has downplayed the speculation. LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh said the party would not react definitively until Obi speaks personally, describing defection as “normal in Nigerian politics.” He added that any departure would stem from personal ambition rather than party failure, urging Obi to reconcile internally but wishing him well if he leaves.

Meanwhile, the ADC is gearing up for the future. The party plans to hold its national convention in mid-2026 to select a presidential candidate, with a focus on nationwide mobilization and structural consolidation. Spokesperson Abdullahi emphasized that 2026 will be pivotal, with the emergence of a candidate expected to “redraw the political dynamic.”

As of December 28, 2025, Peter Obi has made no public statement addressing the rumors. The planned December 31 declaration has not yet taken place, leaving the reports in the realm of speculation amid ongoing opposition realignments. Nigerian politics remains fluid, with defections and coalitions shaping the path to 2027.
