The Abia State Government has announced plans to roll out a health campaign, tagged “Project 10 Million: Know Your Number, Control Your Number,” aimed at screening 480,000 residents for hypertension and diabetes.
This initiative will be flagged off by Governor Alex Otti on October 28, 2024, as part of the administration’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare across the state.
This initiative was by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a media briefing on Monday,
Kanu explained that the program will take place in all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) through strategically identified screening hubs. “The project is a collaboration with Roche Diagnostics, which has pledged ₦30 million to support the effort.
“This initiative will formally kick off across the country, but Governor Alex Otti will launch it here in Abia.
“Through advocacy and preparation, we’ve identified high-density screening locations in all LGAs to ensure wide coverage and access.”
Prince Kanu highlighted that the project is part of Governor Otti’s broader vision to improve healthcare access and promote healthy living in Abia.
“As of now, Abia State remains free from new cases of Cholera, Lassa fever, Diphtheria, and M-pox.
“This is a testament to the dedication and proactive efforts of the Ministry of Health in ensuring the well-being of our people.
The “Project 10 Million” campaign emphasises early detection and control of non-communicable diseases, aiming to reduce the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, which are major public health concerns in Nigeria.
“With the combined efforts of the government and strategic partners, the initiative is poised to set a new standard for community-based healthcare interventions in the state”, Kanu stated.
The October 28 launch promises to be a significant step in Abia’s journey toward improved health outcomes, signalling the Otti administration’s commitment to preventive care and a healthier future for all residents.
