Millions will lose their jobs while corporations pocket record profits, thanks to artificial intelligence, Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton — widely known as the “Godfather of AI” — has warned.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Hinton predicted that wealthy companies will deploy AI to replace workers on an unprecedented scale, creating deep inequality.
“It’s going to create massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits. It will make a few people much richer and most people poorer. That’s not AI’s fault, that is the capitalist system,” he declared.
Although mass layoffs are yet to peak, Hinton said the early signs are clear, with entry-level job opportunities already shrinking. He dismissed universal basic income as a solution, insisting it cannot replace the dignity people derive from work.
Beyond jobs, Hinton warned that AI could also fuel catastrophic risks — from bioweapons in the wrong hands to the possibility of human extinction once machines achieve superintelligence.
