Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, a governorship aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, has announced his withdrawal from the party’s primary election.
This decision comes after growing controversy surrounding the delegates list and violent incidents that marred the process.
The APC primary was scheduled to begin at 9 AM at the Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, but by 6:30 PM, the election had not started. Delegates were reportedly being accredited at undisclosed hotels across Awka, the state capital. Earlier in the day, a violent altercation broke out at one of the accreditation points, with thugs allegedly hired by an aspirant injuring several delegates in an attempt to hijack the process.
Okonkwo’s decision to withdraw follows the exits of Sir Paul Chukwuma and Hon. Chuma Umeoji from the race. The remaining contenders in the primary include Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Hon. Edozie Madu.
In a letter announcing his withdrawal, Okonkwo explained that the violence and chaotic developments within the party made it impossible for him to continue. He cited concerns for the safety of his supporters, stating that the risk was too great to continue with the race. Despite stepping down, Okonkwo emphasized his continued passion for public service and his commitment to the development of Anambra State and Nigeria. He also reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s development agenda.
Okonkwo thanked his supporters for their trust and dedication, stating that his political journey would continue despite his exit from the gubernatorial race. His withdrawal highlights the challenges and instability that have plagued the APC primary election in Anambra.
