From Ioanna Ferpan, Moscow, Russian Federation
The Nigerian delegate at the Russia-Africa Social Forum, which took place this November in Russia, Emmanuel Johnson Chukwuka, has outlined the importance of Nigeria’s membership of BRICS nations.
According to him, the influential, multipolar group of countries would greatly appreciate Nigeria’s fortunes in many fora.
“This will be the right step towards right direction. It will open new economic, humanitarian, scientific prospects for Nigeria. BRICS tries to reduce the dependence on the dollar, promoting the usage of national currencies for the international transactions. Financial strategy of this group could help to strengthen Naira which is crucial to Nigerian economy”, the politician said.
He also thinks that Nigeria has to extend it collaboration with Russia. From his point of view, both countries have a lot in common: both are regional leaders and are rich in natural resources. Russia and Nigeria are highly populated and multinational states. Moreover, the Russian Federation has always been a friend to Africa, fighting against colonialism.
As the country holding the chairmanship position in BRICS, Russia has organized a series of events aimed at expanding cooperation with the African continent, including the Russian-African Social Forum, which has held since 2018 and the first Russia-Africa Ministerial Conference which took place in Sochi, a Russian city in November 2024.
