Cameroonians protest the results of the presidential election that gave power to Paul Biya for the eighth time
Cameroon election protests erupt

Yaoundé, Cameroon – October 22, 2025

Security forces in Cameroon deployed tear gas, water-cannons and heavy patrols on Tuesday as supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary staged demonstrations in multiple cities including the capital, Yaoundé, and the northern city of Garoua. The protests come amid growing concerns over the validity of the recent presidential election in which long-time president Paul Biya is widely expected to win a eighth term.

According to media reports, partial tallies from the election held on October 12 suggest that Biya, aged 92, is set to extend his rule, which began in 1982. The opposition claims these figures are manipulated and that the election has been marred by irregularities, fueling public anger and protest action.

Key Developments

  • Protesters erected barricades and set fires in districts of the economic hub Douala. In response, security units used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds.
  • Over 20 people were arrested in Garoua on charges of “incitement to rebellion and insurrection”, according to Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji.
  • The opposition’s claims of victory have not been recognised by officials. The ruling party’s office in Dschang was set ablaze amid the tensions, further highlighting the volatility of the moment.

Why the Tension?

Analysts say Biya’s dominance is under increasing strain from economic hardship, security issues—especially in the Anglophone regions—and public frustration with governance. Yet his grip remains tight thanks to weak opposition, fragmented politics and an electoral environment critics say is tilted in his favour.

The opposition argues the electoral process lacks transparency and that key rivals—such as Maurice Kamto in earlier contests—have been excluded from meaningful participation.

What Happens Next

The country awaits final confirmation of results from the constitutional court, expected later this month. Meanwhile, the heavy security deployment suggests the government is preparing for potential escalation. Should the court validate the expected outcome, Biya would extend his presidency into what could be a nearly half-century tenure.

Implications

  • A further term for Biya may deepen doubts about democratic governance in Cameroon and raise international concerns over fairness and legitimacy.
  • The opposition’s inability to credibly challenge the result may fuel disillusionment among citizens, risking long-term political instability.
  • Heavy-handed responses to protests risk wider unrest, especially in regions already affected by conflict and marginalisation.
