The Executive Director of Eye On The Future Initiative (EFI), Comrade Josephine Omodior has called for a concerted efforts from all and sundry to create a brighter future for the Girl Child.
October 11 had been set aside as International Day of the Girl Child. The 2024 International Day of the Girl theme is ‘Girls’ vision for the future’.
This year’s theme conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.
In a Press Release on Friday in Asaba to mark this year’s Celebration of the Girl Child, the EFI boss, lamented that the future of the Girl Child seems bleak across the country and called for special attention to the Girl Child.
She noted that the Girl Child was being faced with so many challenges globally, imploring leaders at all levels in the country to rise up to the occasion and address issues confronting the Girl Child.
“We are living in a world today where the Girl Child is faced with so many challenges and we can’t pretend that all is well with our girls. But how long are we going to close our eyes to the sorry state of the Girl Child in our midst? Something drastic must be done by our leaders to change the narrative”, she said.
The EFI boss added that; “Let’s work together to create a brighter future for Our Girl Child. The future seems bleak with the challenge of violence against the Girl Child, teenage pregnancy, child marriage , poverty and inaccessibility to education and others.
Access to Education is important for The Girl Child. Education must be accessible to the Girl child to pave way for a better Future. Parents should discourage and protect their children against all sort of vices prevalent in the society.
Although, Child Girl discrimination is reducing in our society, there are still more work to be done to enable the girl child reach their full potentials without any form of challenge”.
The Executive Director who is also the Assistant Secretary of the Delta State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), advocated education and skills training, health and nutrition programmes, Economic empowerment initiatives, advocacy , policy change and community engagement for the Girl Child if we must get it right as a people.
According to her also; “We cannot afford to look the other way when the Girl Child is passing through untold hardship in the country . As we join the rest of the world in Celebration of the Child Girl, we are calling for protection and Empowerment of our girls. Let us work together to make our society a better place for the Girl Child”.
