The Enugu State Government has designed and produced the Enugu Stove, an innovative green energy and safe cooking technology aimed at addressing deforestation, protecting ecosystems, and preventing household cooking accidents across Nigeria and Africa.
The stove, built entirely from local content, uses smokeless and odourless coal briquettes to generate heat. According to the State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Engr. Lawrence Eze, the stove was fabricated in collaboration with the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) and features a double-chamber system that keeps the outer surface cool even during cooking.
Eze explained that the stove eliminates the risks associated with gas explosions and adulterated kerosene, which have long caused serious burns and fatalities in homes and eateries. “The stove is designed to provide a safe, reliable alternative for households and small businesses,” he said.
The Enugu Stove will be produced in three sizes — student, family, and commercial — and is designed to minimize heat loss while improving energy efficiency. The coal briquettes are derived from Enugu’s abundant, purified, dehydro-carbonised coal, making it both affordable and sustainable.
To support local production, the government plans to establish four coal briquette factories, one in each senatorial zone. These factories will refine raw coal into smokeless briquettes, ensuring accessibility and affordability for all users. The initiative is expected to reduce firewood and charcoal consumption, curb radical tree felling, and safeguard forests and ecosystems.
According to Eze, the project aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s broader vision for a sustainable energy mix. The new Ministry of Energy and Solid Minerals will coordinate coal mining and distribution to the briquette factories to ensure consistent supply and support industrial growth in the state.
With the rollout of the Enugu Stove, Enugu State is taking a major step toward promoting green energy, safe cooking, and environmental protection, offering a model that could be replicated across Nigeria and Africa.
