The Enugu Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology is set to lead the state into a new era of digital transformation, with a N10 billion investment commitment from the federal government.

The investment plan was announced by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr Tijani, on Thursday during a working visit to Enugu. The investment will significantly bolster the state’s technological infrastructure, foster innovation, and expand digital access across Enugu.

Governor Peter Mbah is already driving a tech-driven economy in the State, which is rapidly gaining momentum, with the N10 billion funding pledge from the federal government aimed at strengthening the state’s technological infrastructure.

Dr. Tijani applauded Governor Mbah for his visionary leadership and highlighted the significant strides the state has made in sectors such as infrastructure, education, and industry. These advancements, he noted, lay a strong foundation for the youth to thrive in a digital economy. He further emphasized the need for robust digital infrastructure as a catalyst for fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.

One of the central initiatives discussed during the visit was Project 774 Connectivity. The ambitious project aims to extend reliable internet access to all 17 local government secretariats across Enugu. Powered by Galaxy Backbone and NIGCOMSAT, this initiative will create a seamless digital environment, connecting government offices, schools, healthcare centres, and other state institutions. The project is set to provide internet access to over 200 state institutions, ensuring that residents benefit from enhanced communication, education, and healthcare services.

In a further boost to Enugu’s digital transformation, Galaxy Backbone is set to collaborate with the state to establish a Digital Innovation Complex. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for digital innovation, training, and entrepreneurship development, offering a conducive environment for tech startups and the nurturing of digital talent.

Another highlight of the visit was the announcement of plans to address rural connectivity. Dr Tijani shared that the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) would facilitate the laying of 15 kilometres of fibre optic cables and the construction of a new Base Station. These efforts are aimed at improving internet access in underserved areas, thus integrating more communities into the digital economy.

The federal government’s commitment to Enugu’s technological growth was further underscored by the announcement of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Regional Centre at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The centre will offer advanced computing and processing facilities, helping to position the South East as a leading hub for AI research and development. Additionally, a new South East Zonal Office of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will be launched in Enugu, further driving digital literacy and cybersecurity training initiatives across the region.

Dr Tijani also introduced the Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) initiative, which will aim to train 1.155 million residents of Enugu in essential digital skills by 2027. The program targets underserved populations such as artisans, market women, civil servants, and students, ensuring that everyone has access to the tools needed to thrive in a digitally-driven world.

Receiving the visiting Minister in Government House Enugu, Governor Mbah expressed deep gratitude for the federal government’s support, noting that this partnership marks a turning point in the state’s journey toward becoming a technology-driven economy. He pointed to ongoing projects such as the Smart Green Schools and e-governance platforms as early signs of Enugu’s digital future.

Highlighting the importance of security in this transformation, Governor Mbah referenced the state’s Command and Control Centre, which integrates with the National Communications Commission’s Emergency Communication Centre. This system will enhance public safety through improved emergency coordination and surveillance.

Looking ahead, Governor Mbah emphasized that Enugu is open to further collaborations, both with the federal government and the private sector, to ensure the state’s continued growth as a digital economy. As Enugu progresses with these initiatives, the vision of a $30 billion economy powered by technology and innovation is rapidly becoming a reality.

Dr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh is the Enugu State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology. He is set to host the Enugu Tech Festival (ETF) slated for the 6th to the 9th of May 2025.
