The Abia State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, with his amiable wife, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidimma Otti, joined the family of the late Mazi (Senator) Chris Ogbonna Ukpabi to pay their respects.
Also notable at the funeral was the presence of Eze Aro, Dr Eberechukwu Oji, who also came to pay his last respect as the number one royal father of the Aro people.
The late Senator Ukpabi was laid to rest in his hometown of Atani, Arochukwu in Arochukwu LGA.
Senator Ukpabi, who passed on at the age of 81, served as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the Second Republic. He was the only Senator from the South East elected on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
During the funeral service held at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Ugwuavo Arochukwu, Governor Otti disclosed that the late Senator Ukpabi was one of his consistent supporters in the fight to end bad governance in Abia State.
The Governor noted that Mazi Ukpabi was deeply passionate about improving governance in Abia and was willing to take any necessary steps to achieve that goal.
In his words of comfort to the family, Governor Otti acknowledged how difficult it is to mourn a beloved one but encouraged the family not to grieve like those without hope, reminding them that their father lived a good life and will rise again on the resurrection morning.
He urged the children to embrace peace and unity, and to follow in their father’s good legacies as that would be the best way to honour him.
Governor Otti commended Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa for his role in ensuring that the burial held successfully.
The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Governor Otti for his support and for honoring them with his presence at the burial ceremony.
The event attracted dignitaries from both within and outside Nigeria.
