The federal executive council (FEC) has approved N142.02 billion for the construction of ultra-modern bus terminals in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Sa’idu Alkali, minister of transportation, announced the approval while briefing journalists on Wednesday after the council meeting, chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
Alkali said the contract was awarded to Messrs Planet Project Limited to construct terminals in Abeokuta (south-west), Gombe (north-east), Kano (north-west), Lokoja (north-central), Onitsha (south-east), and Ewu, Edo state (south-south).
The minister described the intervention as the “first direct federal government investment” targeting road transport infrastructure outside of road construction projects.
“Despite the significant role road transportation plays in Nigeria, there are virtually no purpose-built bus terminals designed to serve millions of commuters adequately,” he said.
“This surgical gap has contributed to increased crime rates, higher incidences of road traffic accidents, and a worrying rise in the proliferation of arms and ammunition across major highways.”
The minister added that the programme was conceived within the ministry of transportation to promote road safety, enhance passenger comfort, and stimulate economic activity in the regions.
Following a comprehensive review, Alkali said the proposal was submitted to the president and the FEC for approval, citing its potential to significantly benefit national transportation and security.
