FG Team Completes Assessment Of Flood After Effects In Anambra, Assures Intervention In Affected Areas Soon

The Technical Working Group of the National Steering Committee on flooding has completed its assessment of the after effects of the recent flood disaster in Anambra state with Ogbaru Local Government Area, describing the devastation witnessed in the area as terrible.

The group visited the major affected parts of the council area including Naval Outpost, Onitsha where the fence and other structures were collapsed by the flood, the federal road linking Onitsha and Ogbaru that was totally destroyed and the two major bridges on the road.

They also visited Ogbaru Local Government Headquarters at Atani where the entire fence, gate, and other structures were pulled down.

Speaking during the assessment tour, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim commended the team for visiting the state expressing hope that they will produce a detailed report and that the federal government will intervene immediately to save people in the areas from untold hardship.

Dr Ibezim emphasized on the need for states and federal government to join efforts to end issue of flooding in Nigeria as the incident has caused the country much damage.

The Leader of the team, Engineer Dilichukwu Etigbue while rating damages recorded in the state after the recent flood disaster in some parts of the country high, promised that the team will submit the report as soon as possible to the presidency for immediate action.

The Transition Committee Chairman for Ogbaru Local Government Area, Mr Pascal Aniegbunam called on the Buhari led administration to as a matter of urgency intervene on the Ogbaru federal road as it is the only major route that connects communities in the area and links the council area with Onitsha.

A villager at Umunankwo Osamala in Ogbaru, Mr Sylvester Nsofor commended the federal and state governments on the visit, and assured that people in the area will maximally support the government during the construction of the collapsed bridges, and pleaded the government to hasten up with construction of the federal road to lessen their suffering.
