Arochukwu, Abia State – His Eminence, Eze Dr. Eberechukwu Oji (Eze Aro IX), has honoured 32 illustrious Aro sons and daughters whose enduring legacies, he said, continue to inspire the community. He urged Umu Aro to draw strength from these achievements to build a brighter future for the Kingdom and generations to come.

The honourees included trailblazing leaders, scholars, missionaries, and cultural icons such as Dr. Alvan Ikoku, Dr. K.O. Mbadiwe, Mazi Mbonu Ojike, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Prof. Chimere Ikoku, Prof. Ernest Ugo, Col. Tony Eze, Mazi S.G. Ikoku, Mazi Pita Nwana, Prof. O.C. Nwana, Spud Nathan, and missionary figures Mary Slessor and Hugh Goldie, alongside 26 others.

Announcing future plans, the monarch revealed that Aro Day 2025 will be dedicated to honouring 100 Umu Aro posthumously, in recognition of their significant contributions to sustaining the Kingdom both nationally and internationally.

“Aro is blessed with men and women whose names ring across history. Their works light our path. Next year, we shall celebrate 100 Umu Aro posthumously to remind ourselves and our children that service, excellence, and sacrifice define who we are,” Eze Oji declared.

Speaking on the theme of Ikeji-Aro 2025, “Aro Renaissance: Celebrating 100 Years of Omu-Aro as a Symbol of Aro Culture and Identity,” the monarch reaffirmed Arochukwu’s legacy as the cradle of Igbo civilisation. He honoured Mazi T.K. Utchay, who conceptualised Omu-Aro, and celebrated Mazi S.W. Okereke, Mma Mary Okoro, and Mma Mgbeke Ukwu Eni for their roles in globalising the festival.

In his commitment to youth empowerment, the Eze Aro also recognised 19 young people, one from each village, assuring the Kingdom that no child of Arochukwu will be left behind. He encouraged them to pursue education and enterprise as pathways to upliftment.

The event also featured a competitive cultural showcase among the 19 villages of Aro. Atani emerged winner, followed by Ugbo in second place, Obinkita in third, Ujari fourth, Amoba fifth, and Asaga sixth. Isimkpu received the award for the most organised crowd, while Ugbo was crowned the most innovative group. Nzuko Arochukwu Worldwide presented trophies and cash prizes to the winners as a mark of appreciation and motivation.
