INEC: We Never Denied Any Political Party Access To Election Materials In Edo State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has strongly denied allegations that it has refused political parties access to inspect the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other materials used in the recent elections in Edo State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, described the accusations as “baseless, misleading, and devoid of truth.”

In a statement issued on October 8, 2024, Dr. Onuoha emphasized that INEC, under his leadership, remains committed to upholding the principles of transparency, fairness, and integrity in all electoral processes.

He stressed that the inspection of election materials is a right guaranteed by law to all parties involved in election petitions, and the Commission is mandated to facilitate this process.

“At no time have I or any official in my office obstructed or denied any political party or their representatives access to inspect the materials used in the last elections,” Dr. Onuoha stated.

“INEC is fully aware of the legal implications of such actions, and we are dedicated to supporting the lawful processes that enable parties to seek redress in the courts.”

Dr. Onuoha further informed the public that a formal inspection of the election materials, including the BVAS devices, has been scheduled to take place on October 9, 2024, at 10:00 AM at INEC’s headquarters in Edo State. All political parties and their representatives are invited to participate in this process, which will be conducted according to legal procedures to ensure transparency and adherence to the rule of law.

INEC reaffirmed that any political party or candidate seeking to inspect the election materials will be granted access, provided they follow the proper procedures as outlined by the Election Tribunal and relevant legal frameworks.

“It is, therefore, unfortunate that these baseless accusations have been circulated without any evidence or proper engagement with my office,” Dr. Onuoha noted. He urged stakeholders and the general public to disregard the misinformation, reaffirming the Commission’s loyalty to the Nigerian people, the Constitution, and the rule of law.

INEC also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the electoral process remains free, fair, and accountable, calling on any party wishing to engage with the REC’s office regarding the inspection of materials to do so through the appropriate legal channels.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner concluded by assuring all parties of the Commission’s full cooperation in the inspection process.
