Supporters of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State have called on the governor to revisit the law splitting the old Kano Emirate into five emirates with the goal of reinstating the deposed 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi.

Emir Sanusi was dethroned by the immediate former governor of the state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in March 2020 and was banished to Loko and Awe in Nasarawa State.

His banishment was however declared illegal and unconstitutional by the Federal High Court in Abuja, after which he was allowed to freely travel.

But supporters, who trooped out in their hundreds on Sunday to welcome the governor after his Supreme Court triumph, restated their call with chants of “New Governor, New Emir”, a chant that has become synonymous with the call for the reinstatement of the deposed emir.

Also, since the triumph of Governor Yusuf at the Supreme Court, similar calls have resurfaced on different posts across social media platforms.

Recall that in June last year, shortly after the swearing-in of Governor Yusuf, the governor had said his government was yet to make any decision on the status of the new emirates established by his predecessor, contrary to reports making the grounds.

The governor’s reaction came on the heels of a report that the government had concluded plans to sack all the newly appointed emirs and reinstall the deposed emir as the sole first class traditional ruler in the state.

Sources familiar with the issue, also told our reporter that the issue is gaining momentum, adding that a bill seeking for the reversal of the creation of new emirates will soon be sent to the state assembly.

When contacted on the issue, the spokesman to the governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa said, “There have been these types of clamour right from our campaign days; it’s not a new thing in Kano.

“Government decisions are made through the process of an administrative system. At the moment, I have no idea whether or not there will be changes in the Kano Emirates Law and I have no permission to speak on the issue. Only time can tell,” he said.
