The town of Oba, in Anambra State, was a beehive of activities on Monday, 30th December, following the gathering of men, women, youths and children of the community at the home of the new Igwe-elect, HRM Engr Sir Augustine Chinedu Emelobe, who was elected into office on December 21st.
The solemn ceremony was performed by elders and kingmakers, led by the elder of Urueze, otherwise known as ‘Aka ji Ofo Oba’, and elders of the nine villages that make up the town. They were the ones who presented the Igwe-Elect with a new Ọfọ Oba (the highest staff of authority and spirituality), symbolizing the community’s trust and confidence in his leadership.
The event, which took place at the ancient shrine of the community called Okuana Oba, was at Urueze, the eldest community of the town. According to ancient traditions, the crown and ofo are given to the king by the eldest community of the town.
After the traditional rites had been performed by the elders, the new King went straight to the New Bethel Anglican Church, also at Urueze Oba, and dedicated his crown and leadership of the community to God.
The creme of Oba was gathered for the ceremony, which is steeped in tradition and custom, and they showed their unwavering support for their new king.
The event was characterized by music, dance, food and drinks of all kinds. Traditional music groups and bands took their time to showcase the best of their musical talents.
Recall that on December 21, the people of Oba conducted a well-attended, rancor-free election, which was covered by the media and shared on Facebook and other social media platforms. Security agencies, including the police, were present.
At the end of the day, Engr. Augustine Chinedu Emelobe was elected as Igwe of Oba, and Eze Okpoko II.
