The Headquarters of 82 Division, Nigerian Army, has firmly dismissed recent allegations that troops of the 245 Battalion are harassing residents of Ochon Community in Obubra Local Government Area amid a land dispute with neighboring Alesi Community in Ikom LGA, Cross River State.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division described the reports as “false, misleading, and clearly aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
The Army clarified that its personnel are deployed solely for internal security operations, with a mandate to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure, and uphold public order in accordance with constitutional provisions. Following renewed clashes between the two communities on 19 September 2025, troops responded swiftly to prevent further violence and restore calm across the affected regions.
82 Division emphasized its strict neutrality in all communal, ethnic, political, and land-related matters, stating it has no stake in the ownership or resolution of the disputed land. The Division reiterated its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
Community leaders and stakeholders were urged to pursue peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes, while the public was advised to disregard any reports intended to undermine the Army’s peacekeeping efforts. The Division also encouraged citizens to report credible threats or misconduct through established channels for prompt action.
82 Division reaffirmed its dedication to working with other security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to ensure lasting peace and security throughout Cross River State.
