OYC Calls for Foreign Intervention

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has called on key international embassies in Nigeria to intervene in what it described as the unlawful detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, the group said OYC seeks diplomatic help from the governments of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, Russia, and France.

OYC said Kanu’s continued detention, despite multiple court orders granting him freedom, amounts to a serious violation of human rights and international conventions Nigeria has ratified.

OYC Demands Observers for Monday Protest

The letter, dated October 15, 2025, also informed the embassies of a planned peaceful protest slated for Monday, October 20, 2025, at the gates of Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

The demonstration, which will feature democracy advocate Comrade Omoyele Sowore and other civil rights groups, aims to draw attention to what OYC called the “systematic persecution of voices of conscience.”

The group urged foreign missions to send international observers to monitor the protest and report any intimidation or violence by security agencies. It emphasized that global monitoring would help ensure transparency and protect protesters’ rights.

OYC Urges Global Pressure on FG

Reiterating its stance, the Ohanaeze Youth Council said diplomatic pressure from the global community is vital to compel the Nigerian Government to obey existing court rulings and release Kanu unconditionally.

“We trust your missions will act in alignment with democratic values and the universal principles of freedom,” the letter stated.

OYC maintained that history would remember those who defended justice and human dignity in Nigeria’s struggle for accountability.

Founded in 2001, the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) serves as the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, representing Igbo youths across Nigeria and the diaspora. The group advocates for justice, unity, and equal rights, often engaging in civic actions to defend democratic and human rights causes.
